Slide Into Rhymes
Nursery Rhymes provide the basis for phonemic awareness and early reading skill development. This interactive session will give teachers tools to create experiences in k-1 classrooms that lead into early reading.
This interactive session provides teachers with tools and strategies for incorporating nursery rhymes into early learning experiences. These experiences strengthen early reading skill development, especially phonemic awareness. Early readers need to hear how words are made from sounds, and need to understand how sounds can be manipulated. Through chanting, clapping and movement and singing activities, young learners will explore sound, rhythm, (leading to word manipulation skills, syllabication, and much more!) Additional activites include work with word slides, readers theatre, and cross curricular thematic connections.
Helen Raczuk has been an educator for more than 30 years, working as a music educator, literacy consultant, author, workshop leader, on-line curriculum developer, Alberta Education curriculum coordinator, teacher librarian, homeschool facilitator, student teacher facilitator - to name a few. She is passionate about reading, presently working with a charter school as a literacy specialist mentoring teachers and working with students to strengthen literacy skills.
