Writing and Illustrating Twisted Fairy Tales (Gr. 4-8)
Topic:
An in-depth look at a Twisted Fairy Tale Unit that involves students both writing and illustrating their own picture books as a published piece.
Summary:
Teachers will be introduced to a Twisted Fairy Tale unit that can be adapted and used for grades 4-8. This unit of study will cover using mentor texts (for both writing and illustration), sequences of lessons, introducing storyboarding, using variety of points of view in illustrations, and supplementary writing activities that can be used alongside this unit. Assessments based on the works of Lucy Calkins and Adrienne Gear have been adapted to correlate with Alberta Program of Studies for Language Arts. Examples of mentor texts will be shown, and a list of resources shared.
Biography:
Jen LeGrandeur has been a classroom teacher and Learning Support Teacher for 20 years, and is currently the LST at Park Meadows School. Her primary role over the past 2 years has been to provide writing support and guidance in classrooms, working closely with teachers.
